PUKAR’s Parivartan team and Strengthening Local Democracies team engaged with each other at a deeper level. It was an energising day. They spoke about their projects, activities and processes as well as their challenges, successes and hopes for the future.

“What does PUKAR mean to you?” asked team member Shrutika.
She asked us to draw and illustrate our views on colourful papers arranged in the letter “P.” This energising activity helped us start our day with freshness. It also allowed every team member to share their unique perspective about their workplace.
रिसर्च के बाद हमारे fellows का एक और महेत्त्व्पूर्ण काम होता है, उस जानकारी को लोगो तक पहुचाना उसके परिणाम लोगो को बताना. मंडाला में रहने वाली कुछ fellows ने अपनी मां और रिसर्च से जुड़ी महिलाओं को शिक्षा का महत्त्व बताने की कोशिश कि उनकी रिसर्च में पता चला के मंडाला प्लास्टिक फैक्ट्री में काम करने वाली हर 2 में से 1 महिला अशिक्षित है और जिन्होंने पढ़ाई की है वो सिर्फ प्राथमिक शिक्षा ही प्राप्त कर पाई हैं| महिलाओं से चर्चा के दौरान महिलाओं के पढ़ने और बाहर जा कर काम करने के बारे में इन महिलाओं के विचार आए तो पता चला के अब महिलाएं सोच रही हैं अपने आत्मनिर्भर होने के बारे में पढ़ाई के बारे में ताके लड़कियों या औरतों को किसी का सहारा ना तलाश करना पड़े|

This project was initiated in the collaboration with SWASTH Foundation and was implemented in the M-East ward of Mumbai in Mandala and in Lallubhai Compound buildings that are built by Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA).

Good stories share a slice of someone’s “life as lived,” rather than one-sided stories of oppression and victimhood or transformation after an NGO’s intervention. Through this collection of stories, we hope to offer humane accounts of the lives of three girls*–Manju, Raheen and Alia who had joined our Girls’ Voice Initiative Program supported by Rise Up and Cummins India Foundation.

Girls and boys from Mandala and Kaula Bandar were engaged in a 3-month long computer course run by Stree Bal Shakti and PUKAR. The students were highly involved in the process– they asked important questions and learned at a very fast pace that pleased the facilitators.
The Healthy Cities Wealthy Cities team has been collaborating with Professor Suresh, an economist from IIM-Bangalore, to explore the social capital of small and micro-entrepreneurs in Mumbai. The questions for this collaboration were prepared by the team and the Professor jointly. The team conducted fifty life story interviews of various entrepreneurs, keeping the balance of areas of businesses (leather, food, textile etc), religion, location and language. After reading the interviews, Professor Suresh sent the following feedback to the team:

Witness highlights from our Parivartan Project. We’re working with 831 students across seven Ashramshalas in Palghar, Vikramgad, Wada block. They have shared their knowledge using creative ways.
The schools are located in Bhopoli, Talavali, Aamgaon, Govade, Masvan, Khutal, and Lalthane. The students are from the 8th and 9th standards.

पुकार संस्थेच्या माध्यमातून आम्ही कळवा येथील जय भिम नगर कचरावेचक महिलांचा अभ्यास हा विषय रिसर्चसाठी निवडला होता. अकरा महिन्याच्या कालावधीत आमच्या गटाने या विषयावर रिसर्च केला आणि त्यांच्या आयुष्यात घडणाऱ्या प्रत्येक सुख दुःखाची माहिती गोळा केली. ग्रॅज्युएशन इव्हेंट नंतर आमच्या विषयाला घेऊन आम्हाला एडवोकेसी करण्यासाठी सांगण्यात आले होते. त्यामुळे ज्या महिलांकडून आम्ही माहिती घेतली ती माहिती आम्ही त्या महिला आणि त्यांच्या मैत्रिणी यांना एकत्र करून सादर केली. आणि त्यांना व त्यांच्या मुलांना कसे शिक्षित करता येईल, कसे सक्षम होता येईल यावर चर्चा करून जनजागृती करण्यात आली. तसेच त्यांची मुले ही कशी पुकार सोबत येऊन वेगवेगळ्या विषयावर अभ्यास करू शकतात या बदल माहिती दिली. माहिती देऊन झाल्यावर आमच्या कामाबद्दल त्यांचा अभिप्राय घेतला.
Why does violence happen? Whom does it happen against? How does it impact someone? These were some of the questions we posed to engage with boys. During the discussion, boys realised how men and boys act aggressively and violently against women and girls. They started thinking about what they can do to change their own behaviour and the behaviour of men and boys they know.
Kiran Kakade, PUKAR’s ex-youth fellow participated in ‘Fools’ Forum 13′ organised by Blue Ribbon Movement. Topic of the Forum was ‘How do we make Democrazy come alive?’ She participated with other youth leaders. They shared their insights and challenges with respect to the topic.

“Youth & India’s Sustainable Development Goals” a book curated and edited by Professor Saigita Chitturu from Tata Institute of Social Sciences is recently published by Vitatsa Press ( New Delhi). Three members of PUKAR Team, Dr. Anita Patil Deshmukh, Payal Tiwari and Sunil Gangavane jointly contributed to the chapter “Creating Level Playing Field: Participatory Action Research for Gender Equality and Youth Development”
Their expertise in the fields Community Based Participatory Action Research (CBPAR), gender and youth engagement through the Youth Fellowship Program makes that chapter an energising and rich reading.
PUKAR wishes to convey its heartfelt gratitude to Professor Saigita Chitturu and Centre for Lifelong Learning, TISS for giving PUKAR this wonderful opportunity.
PUKAR has raised awareness about Asmita Scheme in 23 villages in Palghar and tried to get some ground realities related to the scheme. The above image contains some important information about the scheme and its implementation.
‘पुकार’ संस्था, ‘सार्वजनिक आरोग्य विभाग जिल्हा पालघर’ सोबत क्षयरोग कुष्ठरोग निर्मुलन अभियानात सक्रीय
सार्वजनिक आरोग्य विभाग, जिल्हा पालघर ह्यांच्या वतीने डिसेंबर २०२० ह्या महिन्यात ‘सक्रीय क्षयरुग्ण शोध मोहीम’ आणि कुष्ठरुग्ण शोध अभियानाचे आयोजन झाले होते. क्षयरोग, कुष्ठरोगाविषयी असलेली भीती आणि गैरसमज ह्यामुळे लक्षणे असलेली व्यक्ती उपचारासाठी तयार होत नाही हे लक्षात घेऊन, क्षयरोग आणि कुष्ठरोग ह्यांचे निर्मुलन व्हावे ह्या उद्देश्याने ‘पुकार’ने अभियानामध्ये जनजागृतीची जबाबदारी घेतली. जनजागृती मोहीम सुरु केली.
पालघर तालुक्यातील: आंभान, बांधान, चरी, सावरखंड, कोसबाड, पोळे, दुर्वेस, साये, करळगाव, वांदिवली, वाकडी, वसरोली, खरशेत, काटाळे, लोवरे, गिरनोली, सागावे, कोकनेर, लालठाणे, सोनावे, दारशेत, बोट, वेह्लोली, खैरे, सातिवली ह्या एकूण २५ गावांमध्ये ११, १२,१३,१४,१५ डिसेंबर २०२० ह्या पाच दिवशी पुकार संस्थेच्या सदस्यांनी घरोघरी जाऊन एकूण ५०१६ घरांमध्ये क्षयरोग, कुष्ठरोगाची लक्षणे आणि उपचाराची माहिती देणारे पत्रक प्रत्येक घरी देऊन समजावून सांगितले. ह्या रोगांविषयीचे व्हिडीओ पाड्यापाड्यावर दाखवून जनजागृती केली.
वेळेत तपासणी करून निदान केल्यास योग्य औषधोपचारांनी क्षयरोग, कुष्ठरोग बरा होतो हे लक्षात आणून देत लक्षणे आढळणाऱ्या व्यक्तींना गावातील आरोग्य आशा सेविकेशी किंवा प्राथमिक आरोग्य केंद्राशी संपर्क करण्यास सांगितले.
गावांमधून संपर्क क्रमांक घेऊन तयार केलेल्या १५० ब्रॉडकास्ट लिस्टवरून पत्रक आणि व्हिडीओ पाठवून माहितीचा प्रसार केला.

15th October is celebrated as the Global Handwashing Day. On this occasion Palghar Zilha Parishad initiated a campaign in Palghar district.
We are happy to share that Team PUKAR participated in the initiative in Palghar, a tribal district near Mumbai. Our team visited villages to villages and demonstrated the how to wash hands with a soap. Team PUKAR raised awareness of importance of handwashing through whats app messages circulated to our broadcast list of 150 villages in Palghar district.

‘पुकार’च्या युथ फेलोशिप प्रकल्पासाठी अनेक वर्षे मार्गदर्शक म्हणून तुम्ही लाभणे हे आमचे भाग्य होते. प्रकल्पामध्ये तरुण वर्ग करत असलेल्या विविध सामाजिक विषयांवरील संशोधनाला तुम्ही वेळोवेळी मार्गदर्शन आणि पाठिंबा दिला. बारीक नजरेने, त्याचबरोबर व्यापक अंगांनी संशोधन विषयाकडे पाहण्याचा तुम्ही दिलेला मूलमंत्र आजही लक्षात आहे. दिशादर्शक आहे. तुमच्या ह्या मोलाच्या योगदानासाठी पुष्पाताई तुम्ही आमच्या कायम स्मरणात रहाल.
पुष्पाताई, तुम्ही आम्हाला दिलेली मुद्देसूद विचारांची शिकवण, तडफदार नजरेची धार, आमच्या सोबत आहे. तुमची समाजहिताप्रतिची निष्ठा आम्हाला या पुढेही ऊर्जा देत राहिल. तुम्हाला प्रेमपूर्वक आदरांजली.
असंख्य चळवळींना, विचारवंतांना, विद्यार्थ्यांना, संस्थांना मार्गदर्शन करणारी ज्ञानज्योत आज जरी मालवली असली तरी त्यांनी पेटवलेले अनेक विचारदिवे सर्वत्र लखलखत राहतील. एका विचारवंत शिक्षिकेला याहून मोठी आदरांजली ती काय!
