About the Subject:
Today’s newspapers seem to have become avenues for marketing products instead of avenues for spreading news information and provoking thought processes. Most of the newspapers claim that what they print is what is demanded by their readers, most of all, the youth. Sanjay and his friends wanted to find out if there was any truth to this. What do today’s youth really expect the newspapers to do? Do today’s youth read newspapers for understanding of the issues?
Challenges & Learnings:
Most of the researchers were students of journalism hence they were particularly interested in finding out the opinions of youth in this regard. They felt that this research will also help them in formulating some policy toward the issues when they start their regular jobs in various newspapers. Most of them did not face many problems in the process.
Conclusion:
This group found out something unexpected. Despite the large presence of electronic media, the youth do read the newspaper for information. While some were suspicious about the neutrality and the transparency of the news delivery, they felt that print media was still much more accountable than the electronic media. Some also felt that the newspapers were full of political news and news of accidents, violence etc which did not have any relevance to their lives and that newspapers failed in giving some guidance for their careers etc.
End Product:
This group created a small newspaper supplement through which they wrote about these conclusions.
