About the Subject: Addiction is a topic which is discussed often by everyone. Despite knowing that certain substances are injurious to health, people are addicted to them. Teenage is the period of life when youngsters want to experience new things, and therefore become susceptible to influences directing them towards addictions. What do youth believe and think about addiction? Which are the drugs or substances that youth are addicted to? What forces them into addictions? Being educated and having full knowledge about its harmful effects, why do they still get addicted? These and other such questions came to the mind of some of the youth of Sonopant Dandekar College. They formed their group of 16 members and started their research
Challenges & Learnings: The group prepared a questionnaire and got it filled by other young people from their college. They also organized essay competitions and elocution competition in the college as a part of community events for data collection. They prepared a script and performed a play on addiction in the community event. Though this, the group learnt presentation skills, communication skills and they were able to remove their stage fear while performing plays in the college. To come in Mumbai for attending workshops and meetings of Youth Fellowship was itself a great learning for this group as they all stay in Palghar and they hardly get chance to come to a city like Mumbai. They also learnt to organize events without the help of their professors.
Conclusion: It was found that 60% of the college-going youth had some addiction or the other. They were mostly addicted of tobacco or smoking. The research was conducted in a semi-rural area and it was found that consumption of charas, ganja is not very prevalent among these college students. It was found that majority of the respondents did not want to reveal about their addictions / habits.
End Product: The group prepared posters and calendar depicting various addictions and their effects on health.
