About the Subject:
Rizwana and her group hails from a community where there is a huge amount of restrictions placed on the freedom of movement of girls and most of the decisions regarding such issues are dictated by the elders of the house. Many young women feel that this impedes their progress. They wished to discover how this impacted their lives.
Challenges & Learnings:
When these young women started going around in the community, most men and women in the community started pointing fingers at them and discouraging them from doing this survey. Many young women who were being interviewed were reluctant to answer truthfully because of fear of their family members. But the researchers diligently and tenaciously continued their probing. They took enormous efforts to make the women understand why this kind of information was sought and how important it was for their own daughters and sisters. This led to increased self confidence among the researchers, honed their communication skills and reaffirmed their determination to complete the project.
Conclusion:
The researchers found out that most of the time, they were restricted due to fear on the part of the parents regarding advances towards their daughters by men and some unwanted incidents which may happen. This fear often leads to discontinuation of their education and stagnates their development and opportunities which come with education. The young women studied felt that this was definitely against their rights.
