About the Subject:
This group of Muslim women students decided to research the attitude and feelings of the young Muslim women about the attire dictated by their religious leaders. The use of burkha was made compulsory by a Fatwa from the Imam a few years ago and there was a strong resistance to that order from the young Muslim women who felt that this was against their human rights. Burkha is not just a piece of attire but a restriction which transcends many areas of their life.
Challenges & Learnings:
Due to its close association with religion and religious leadership, no one was willing to talk about it out of fear! There were many women who left the project. These brave young women decided to have a debate with their religious leaders after they acquainted themselves with the Koran. But when they approached that leader he refused to speak to them until they were attired in the Naqab! They persisted in their research despite all these difficulties with great determination and courage!
Conclusion:
These researchers found out that women wear Naqab only because it is dictated by the religious leadership. Most of the women who answered the questionnaire did not know whether the Koran had actually dictated such attire. Many parents continue to force their daughters to use it to increase their own sense of protectiveness of their children.
End Product:
These young women exhibited many global nationalities wearing Burkha. They also produced a beautiful calendar where each of them expressed their often contrasting views about Naqab!
