About the Subject:
What compels the youth to earn while learning? Is it related to the financial responsibility towards their own education which is taken up by some sensitive youth or is it related to the freedom of expenditure and consumerism associated with that extra cash on hand? What is it that drives this behavior? Shrutika and her group wanted to explore this issue.
Challenges & Learnings:
Most of the students from Ruparel College were earners and learners themselves; therefore the subject was deeply related to their own lives and that of their many friends. Their catalyst Shrutika was a second year participant in the Youth Fellowship program. She found a distinct difference in the group bonding experience of previous year which comprised of friends and group bonding experience of this year who were not all her friends. Conclusion:
They came upon a stark conclusion regarding education itself. What was clear is that while education is supposed to be associated with knowledge acquisition, wisdom, enrichment of the intellect and mind, in today’s world it is more associated with earning capacities and material wealth which comes with higher education. It has become a means to achieve financial security instead of being a goal for overall flourishing of human being.
