Research Projects Theme-wise: 2007 – 2008

The projects are divided under a broad rubric of eight headings – education, culture, sexuality, gender, health, media, environment and livelihood. Each project description delineates the methodology and the language in which research was conducted. “About projects” describes composition of each group and uniqueness of the subject while challenges describe the difficulties that were encountered and overcome by the youth groups. The project description is penned by the respective coordinator and the photographs depict various activities and some of the end products.

The essential conceptualization of the design of the project is such that a group of ten or twelve youth, led by a mentor or a catalyst would, with the help of simultaneous, rigorous training, conduct research over a period of one year, in their own locality or in their own community on a subject of their own choice, which is anchored in their own living experience.

After the orientation session, the process starts with selection of a research question through consensus building. These three months are the most stressful and chaotic period of the fellowship. This is followed by choosing one or two methodologies and the process of data collection which usually ends by February. During this time multiple workshops on various research-related issues are held. Screenings of documentaries, films and theater performances also form part of the pedagogical repertoire. The next two to three months are devoted to analysis and synthesis and then proving or disproving the hypothesis. In the final months everyone’s creativity and ingenuity takes a flight when they are thinking about their final products for the dissemination purposes.

Each group has a catalyst that is selected by the group. She or he could be a peer or someone in a capacity of a teacher or a supervisor although we prefer peer-led groups. Their job mostly involves keeping the group and the participatory process intact by inspiring their colleagues. Each group also has a coordinator assigned by the Youth Fellowship Team, who helps them with intellectual inputs, strategic executions of workshops, community events etc. and acts as a troubleshooter for all their activities through the year! The director is in charge of overall activities.
