About the Subject:
Himanshu, an artist, is passionate about the centrality of public spaces in the life of a city and its dwellers. With fellow artists, he chose to document the increasing challenge to public space in the city.
Challenges & Learnings:
The group delved into the nature of particular spaces and what they meant for the average city dweller. Using the tool of mapping, inhabitants were encouraged to create individual maps of places as remembered in their past (through memory) and the present. The images captured across these different temporalities were used to convey the sheer hybridity of any given public space. The group also used and studied installation art as a tool for reclaiming public space for the public.
Conclusion:
Their own installations and drawings threw light on the crucial value of public space as a site for public expression, and the need to recognize that challenges to it are challenges to democracy.
End Product:
They compiled their images into posters and a photo essay.
