In our study of localities, the endeavour was to attempt to represent different kinds of localities by class, community, usage and geographical location. Conceptually and ethnographically engaging with the idea of \’localities\’, allowed us to separate the great unified Mumbai of the imagination with the many Mumbais that exist on the ground yet at the same time being able to make observations that were applicable across its various sub-worlds.Our engagement with these localities produced fascinating ideas on familiarity, the definition of insiders and outsiders, homogenous and heterogeneous localities, and the ways in which class and gender mutually impact each other in the production of both the class of a locality and safety. |
