This is a very recent settlement and was formed around 1991-95. This space was a dumping ground but in spite of the unhygienic living conditions, people started living here in houses made of bamboo and eventually the settlement grew. Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished these settlements from time to time, they sprang up again and gradually people began living here and Shatabdi Nagar grew bigger. People from different states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh live here together. Though people come from different parts of India most of them are Dalits
There are no traditional occupations as Shatabdi Nagar is a new settlement but some women work as rag pickers and segregate waste, some have ‘bhangar’ (Waste material) shops, garment units, small businesses while work in BMC.
Hindu festivals like Ganpati ustav, Holi, Diwali, Navratri are celebrated in this community. Ambedkar Jayanti ( B.R Ambedkar’ Birthday – prominent Dalit leader and one of the founding fathers of independent India)
