This settlement has residents who migrated from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Bengal, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu with Hindus, Muslims and Christians all living together.
The occupation in this settlement vary across castes, the Maharashtrians prefer a government job whereas people from Uttar Pradesh have pani-puri stalls and those from the south of India are taxi drivers. Earlier, the leather industry in Dharavi was the main occupation in this settlement and work was divided as per caste and many residents worked in the leather business for a long time. Leather factories were located near the Abhyuday Bank in Mahim but with time all of them have been shut down and people have now turned to any work that is available. Women carry on small-scale jobs in their free time and these include weaving belts on per piece basis, cutting thread etc they prefer occupation and part jobs that they can do from home after taking care of their families and the money can be used to their households.
All Indian festivals are celebrated in Rajiv Gandhi Nagar as people belonging to different religions live here.
The entire settlement has no toilets so the situation is grim and the people have to use the private toilets near ONGC by paying one rupee every time. Residents of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar are distressed that in spite of living here for a long time, toilet blocks are not part of the public facilities. A large gutter flows right in front of the settlement . There is no space to dispose garbage either.
