Dhobhighat

Half a century old, this settlement has an intriguing history behind the name Dhobighat. Earlier, there was a dhobighat (laundry facility) in this area. People from Tamil nadu worked here as washermen. The Tamilians migrated and stayed in slums made of aluminum sheets. These sheets would make up for the four walls and the roof made of plastic sheets. Along with these, there were some bamboo houses too. Toddy making was a huge business here. Toddy drums and the fire below it caused black soot all over the area. Presently, the area has many Hindus, Marathas, Kunbi, North Indians (mostly from UP, Bihar), Tamilians and very few Muslims. This settlement is now called Jeevanjyot Rahivashi Sangh.

Men work as house servants usually taken up by men from Kunbi caste. The Kunbi men live together in groups, since their families live in villages. Some are working as government servants. Women in this area work in small scale industrieslike stringing beads, making fans out of peacock feathers, working in a shoe factory around Dharavi.

Since the area is dominated largely by Marathi speaking population all Hindu festivals like Ganpati ustav, Holi, Diwali, Navratri are celebrated in this community.
