I first met Carol when I enrolled in a couple of her classes as a first-year undergraduate at the University of Chicago. At a university known for its powerhouse graduate programs, Carol was one of the few professors I had who took a sincere interest in the education and lives of undergraduates. She went out of her way to champion undergraduate student groups, including (the now defunct) South Asia Watch. She helped create the first Chicago undergraduate study abroad program in Mumbai. When I asked her what to do with a summer fellowship I had received, she immediately connected me with SPARC, a remarkable Mumbai NGO. I can say without hesitation that Carol was the direct mentor to an entire generation of Chicago undergraduates interested in South Asia.

Given that many of her students have moved into a variety of fields as lawyers, physicians, social workers, businessmen, academics, and activists, it is clear that Carol’s impact has been immense, undoubtedly more so than if she had solely focused on mentoring graduate students. In her classes, Carol was one of the few professors who pushed us to engage with the social sciences in a personal way, rather than as a set of abstract concepts. This struck a chord with us, given that the undergraduate years are a key period of intellectual ferment and identity formation.

During one of her classes, we spent a session discussing Silent Spring, Rachel Carson’s remarkable book that jump-started the U.S. environmental movement. At the end of class, Carol said, “I expect one of you to one day write something like this that changes the world.” Changing the world -- it was an uncommon expectation for a professor to have of her students in our cynical, postmodern times. And yet, because of Carol’s encouragement, many of her students will.

This is a great tribute to Carol’s memory!

Thank you for the new website–and even more deeply, thank you for the living tribute to Carol Breckenridge. Her love of life in this world and her imaginative engagement with its betterment were a perfect match for the mission of PUKAR. It was a privilege to have known her just as it has been a source of great satisfaction to experience the ongoing work of PUKAR.

sincerely,

Frank
